At TERATAI Design Studio, we don’t just design sustainable homes, we design, build and live in them. Our Red River Farmhouse, nestled deep in the rainforest, was built using the MH101 Modular House System, a concept that goes beyond affordability to embrace a lifestyle of environmental harmony and community. Self built in a remote location, this project serves as both our home and a working prototype for a pre-designed, thoroughly tested modular housing system. By sharing this system online, we empower others to create sustainable, cost effective homes that suit their unique environments.

The MH101 Design Philosophy
The MH101 Modular House System is designed with efficiency, adaptability and sustainability in mind. Its core principles include:
Central stabilising cores, dual cement cores for the kitchen and bathroom ensure stability while minimising cement use.
A modular, renewable timber frame wraps around the structural cores, allowing for flexible and customizable infill panels crafted from locally sourced sustainable materials.
Open layout, a seamless flow between spaces creates a connected, inviting atmosphere.

Cut and carry timber from fallen trees
Set out the foundations
Install timber base stilts with concrete footings
02 Primary Timber Structure and Roof 3 WEEKS+
Assemble the primary timber post and beam timber structure
Build the roof timber framework
Install metal roofing sheets with insulation underneath
Create skylights for the kitchen and bathroom
03 Decking and Floors 2 WEEKS+
Add the ground floor wraparound deck
Build the timber stairs to the upper level
Add the upper floor deck
Create shuttering and pour concrete for the kitchen floor deck
